A Message From Provost Jersky
Dear Campus Community,
Walking across the campus, I can’t help but feel excited about all the new incoming students on our campus. Their eyes have a sense of wonderment tinged with uncertainty as they embark on a new adventure. I am thankful for each and every one of our new as well as current students that help make up our Long Beach family.
Watching them learn, grow and transform their lives through education remains a constant motivation for me. This is why I pursue new ways to improve Academic Affairs so we can all serve our students better in their educational journey. They are the ultimate purpose we are all here.
I am also grateful that Governor Brown has decided to fund more of the CSU’s operating costs. The budget will enable each state institution to continue the critical work each provides to the next generation of students.
Unfortunately this did come with some concern about the future of higher education. What troubled me about this last round of state budget talks was how hard we had to fight to simply maintain operating costs. From elected officials, campus representatives to community leaders – everyone raised the rooftops in Sacramento to let them know how important public institutions of higher education are to our economy.
A benefit that emerged from this was the outpouring of support we received. We were able to easily tout how our campus contributes not only to the state’s workforce, but to the surrounding communities. We also proved repeatedly how we are meeting the significant demand for a quality, affordable education in our region.
Thank you for your continued service to our students and campus community. You all play a key part in our success.
I hope you all are enjoying your summer,
Brian Jersky
