Message From Provost Jersky

Dear Campus Community,

As a new academic year begins, we look forward to once again seeing our students fill our halls and buildings.  The first few weeks of this new activity has a way of centering our campus with renewed hope and promise. It does, indeed, represent a fresh start for many of our students, as well as the rest of the campus. Don’t we all need that right now?

Recently the news has been dominated by several tragic mass shootings. This utter devastation has left many of us asking the same questions, with little to no change or answers. We feel powerless as we watch what seems like little action from the ones that have the power to change it. This seems to be a repeated issue in the political realm at the moment. We know that gun ownership needs to be sharply reduced and better controlled.

The truth is that we do have the power to change the future. Every day we have the opportunity to educate the next generation of politicians, world leaders, educators and influential voters. This is where we need to focus our attention and advocate for our students and their success. Through them, we have the power to change what seems so broken at the moment.

At convocation President Conoley and I will outline the past year and the future direction of our campus.

From this, I find hope for what we can and do accomplish at CSULB. This will answer back to all injustices that surround us and what we see.

I do believe we have a whole generation that needs us to educate, inform and inspire them. The late author Toni Morrison said ‘the function of freedom is to free someone else.’

This thought reminds me to keep my eye on what is valued and cherished. We have the opportunity to ‘free’ every day. Thank you to our faculty and staff who join me in this life-changing work.

To our future,

Brian Jersky
Provost and Senior Vice President
