Celebrating Women's History Month

Published March 3, 2019

Founded in 1949, Long Beach State came of age during a period of massive social, political, and cultural change. As our young university was growing and expanding, the women’s movement of the 1960s and 1970s was also gaining momentum and increasing its efforts to dismantle barriers to equality. To a remarkable extent, the scholarship, activism, and, yes, persistence of women has fundamentally shaped who we are as an educational institution.

Women’s History Month is a chance to pause and reflect on this vibrant history – on the achievements, past and present, of women at The Beach. The President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) was established in 1989 to remove impediments to women’s progress at Long Beach State and to provide a supportive educational, working, and social environment for all members of the campus community. The signature event of PCSW is the annual Women’s Research Colloquium, which will take place this year on Thursday, March 7, at The Pointe. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about some of the exciting research that Long Beach State women are producing and/or that is related to women’s issues

Please see below for other activities and events that are being presented in conjunction with Women’s History Month. My sincere thanks go out to all of you who will be attending and/or who have had a hand in creating these important and inspiring learning opportunities.
