Your Feedback Needed: Participate in the HERI Survey

By now, you and many of your students will have received an invitation to participate in a survey administered by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA. We ask for your support in responding to the survey and spreading the word so we can improve programs and strategies at CSULB and nationwide.

Faculty members who complete the survey will receive $10 and a chance to win one of two $500 gift cards for either Amazon or the Apple Store (winner’s choice). And, students who complete the survey will earn a chance to win one of four $500 gift cards.

Your (and your students’) feedback will help CSULB better meet the needs of its students and faculty. So please help us out and complete the survey as soon as you can.

The NIH Diversity Program Consortium includes the 10 BUILD programs, the Coordination and Evaluation Center (CEC) and the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN).  In a recent issue of the journal Science, there is an article about  NRMN.  BUILD Research Mentors are encouraged to read the article  and visit the NRMN website to learn more about NRMN and its activities.

Multicultural Workshops and Attendance Policy

As a BUILD Research Mentor, you are required to attend at least one multicultural workshop. If you haven’t attended one already, there are two opportunities coming up in November.

  • Empowering Underrepresented Students in a Diverse Classroom. You have two times from which to choose: Friday, Nov. 4, 1 to 3pm, or Tuesday, Nov. 8, 10am to noon in room PSY 232.

For your attendance to count toward your agreement, you need to arrive no more than 10 minutes late nor leave more than 10 minutes early. Please keep this in mind when planning which workshop you will attend.

For more information, visit the Multicultural Workshops webpage.

SACNAS Is Coming to Long Beach

Image
SACNAS logo
BUILD Scholars are expected to attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) or Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at least once while they are in the program. Since SACNAS will be held right here in Long Beach, Year 1 Scholars will be attending October 13-15, which means they will not be able to work in your lab that Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Some Scholars – perhaps yours? – will also be presenting posters at the conference.  Therefore, they will need your feedback on their presentation.

Conference Travel Clarification

In addition to attending ABRCMS or SACNAS, BUILD Scholars are expected to present their research at a professional conference in their discipline. Travel support is available for those conferences in which they present, up to $1500 a year. In order to be reimbursed for travel expenses, conferences must be professional and approved by BUILD staff.

Needed: Teachers for BUILD Courses

We are looking for faculty to teach the Spring sections of the Science Research Communication and Research Career Explorations courses. They will be held at these times:

  • Research Career Exploration in Science, UNIV 150, MW 3:30-4:45pm
  • Scientific Research Communication, CLA/ENGR/HHS/NSCI 361, MW 11am-12:15pm
  • Scientific Research Communication, CLA/ENGR/HHS/NSCI 361, TuTh 11am-12:15pm

If you can teach one of these sections, please contact Paul Buonora at Paul.Buonora@csulb.edu to let us know of your availability.

Your Role in Recruiting for the Next BUILD Cohort

You can help us recruit the next cohort of BUILD Associates by encouraging your graduate students to keep an eye out for students with potential in research. If they are teaching Freshmen or Sophomores in labs, then they are perfectly poised to find students with an aptitude for research who might otherwise not consider such a career path. Please encourage them to spread the news about BUILD.

Supply Order Deadlines

As a Research Mentor, you have funds available to purchase supplies. You need to spend 50% of those funds by Feb. 28, 2017, and the remainder by May 31, 2017. These funds cannot be carried over. Therefore, as soon as you are ready to order materials and supplies, contact Marie Reed Marie.Reed@csulb.edu.
