Dear Campus Community,

With the fall semester kicking into high gear, I wanted to say welcome back to all our new and returning faculty, staff and students.  I know the parking lots, restaurants and crowds make navigating the campus a bit harder, but I am excited to have all our students back. I love seeing the fresh hope in their eyes as well as their desire to tackle their classes. They inspire me.

As I shared at Convocation this year, we have the all-important task of changing lives. This simple mission left me thankful for a chance to reflect on our collective purpose during convocation. I had the opportunity to show off some of our campus-wide ‘Points of Pride’ and highlight some key programs that assist with student success.

President Conoley also spent a moment discussing the outcomes of Beach 2030. Here are our key campus-wide initiatives.

She rolled out the new CSULB Mission:

CSULB enriches students’ lives through globally informed, high-impact educational experiences with superior teaching, research, creative activity, and action for the public good.

CSULB Vision:

California State University, Long Beach, will be a force for good at the forefront of public education in California and the world.

CSULB Values:

  • Teaching and learning are at the center of who we are and all we do.
  • Compassion, creativity, and innovation characterize our culture.
  • Diversity is our strength.
  • The public good is our responsibility.

She also touted our impressive projected 4-year graduation rate for first-time freshman, which is 34%, up from 28% the year before, and 16% three years ago.

From this, we have a great deal to be proud of, yet we know we have our opportunities and areas of growth ahead of us. New task forces, initiatives and strategic priorities continue to keep our campus evolving and proactively growing to support student success. We have a strong team in all areas of leadership that continue to support our key mission. We also have a few interim leaders joining our team in Academic Affairs. Please welcome these illustrious individuals when you see them on campus:

  • Lorin Johnson – Interim Associate Dean, COTA
  • Beth Manke - Interim Dean for Student Success
  • Deborah Thien – Interim Associate Dean for Enrollment Management, CLA
  • Bonnie Gasior – Interim Director of University Honors Program
  • Margaret Black – Interim Dean of COTA

I want to thank all for stepping into these interim roles. Their leadership keeps our campus running efficiently and effectively for our students, faculty and staff.

As always, I appreciate all of you. Thank you for supporting our campus and students.

Brian Jersky
Provost and Senior Vice President
