The Argus Quartet perform ahupua‘a, a new string quartet co-commissioned by the Carpenter Center by violist and composer Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti. The subject of the new work is the Hawaiian concept of ahupuaʻa—land division centered around community needs.
Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) composer / sound artist dedicated to the arts of our time. A "leading composer-performer" (The New York Times), Lanzilotti has created work characterized by explorations of timbre and an interest in translating everyday sounds to concert instruments using nontraditional techniques. Lanzilotti was honored to be a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
Praised for playing with “supreme melodic control and total authority” and “decided dramatic impact” (Calgary Herald), the Argus Quartet has quickly emerged as one of today’s most dynamic and versatile ensembles. Formed in Los Angeles in 2013, the Quartet has performed in some of the country’s most prestigious venues and festivals, including Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Chamber Music Society of Detroit, the Ravinia Festival, the Albany Symphony’s American Music Festival, and Music Academy of the West.
