Alumnus wins fellowship to study physics in the U.K.
Dr. Thomas E. Baker, ’12, received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award to research condensed matter physics and provide mentorship at the University of York in the United Kingdom.
Baker, who received his Master of Science from Cal State Long Beach, will share knowledge and foster connections across communities in the United States and United Kingdom, and engage in cutting-edge research and expand his professional network as a Fulbright Scholar.
CSULB recognized as leader in sustainable electronic procurement
Cal State Long Beach was recognized as a 2020 EPEAT Purchaser Award winner for being a leader in sustainable electronic procurement. The Beach was among 75 organizations — including cities, states, federal agencies, healthcare systems, universities, companies and more — that were celebrated for their decision to purchase sustainable electronics.
CSULB, a three-star award winner, was one of two CSU campuses to receive the distinction. Cal State Los Angeles was a one-star award winner.
Recent grad wins Future Science Teacher Award
Ryan Ward, ’20, recently won the Future Science Teacher Award from the California Association of Science Educators (CASE).
The award recognizes college students who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to science education through volunteer work, teaching and professional organization activities. Ward, who received his Science Credential from The Beach, is the 14th alumnus to win the award.
Minor in Gerontology program recognized
CSULB’s minor in gerontology recently received the Program of Merit designation from the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). Gerontology is a field dedicated to exploring the global complexity of aging and improving the lives of older adults.
The Program of Merit designation gives programs an AGHE “stamp of excellence” to verify program quality, lobby within their institutions for additional resources, market the program, and recruit prospective students.
The Beach names new associate VP for Budget and Administration
Kara Perkins was appointed to associate vice president for Budget and Administration and will start her new position Oct. 8.
Perkins will serve as the chief budget officer for the campus and will oversee all areas of CSULB’s self-support operations within the Division of Administration and Finance. She currently serves as executive budget director for the California State University system, where she manages and allocates the $7 billion operating budget.
