Beach Academy, a MAPS Program, at the Beach

Beach Academy is a community of scholars and leaders who demonstrate high potential going into their first year at The Beach and would benefit from additional writing and math academic support, mentoring, and coaching.  Every member of the Beach Academy gets connected with a Peer Mentor who will guide them through their first year experience.

The Beach Academy Experience is a guided curriculum that consists of programs, mentoring/coaching, and events that will prepare you to be successful moving forward at the start of your college experience.  It is composed of:

  • Peer Mentoring/Coaching - you will meet with your peer mentor one-on-one and in groups
  • Programs and workshops that will focus on leadership and academic skill building
  • Events to promote and create a sense of belonging and community

If you are required to take Writing preparation course (ENG 100A, ALI 140/145) and/or a Math support course (MATH 92A, 94, STAT 90) in your first two semesters, then you are considered a part of the Beach Academy.

Beach Academy is not required, but highly recommended.  Students who participate can benefit highly from the additional support and have a successful and positive college experience.

Peer Mentors are assigned to all Beach Academy participants.  If you have not received communication from your Peer Mentor, or if you do not have one, please send us an email!

MAPS Peer Mentors take a life coaching approach to mentoring.  Often times, what happens outside of the classroom has the largest impact on what happens inside the classroom.  In this way, we focus on those skills that build confidence and self-efficacy in, not just being a good student at The Beach, but a good member of society.

Guided Registration is an enrollment process where your math and writing courses are prioritized over your other courses.  You will be able to enroll into your (pre)major and GE courses after you register for your required math and writing courses.

  • Important Tip: Put your entire schedule together in advance to avoid course conflicts during registration.
