Become a Friend of the Japanese Garden

The Friends of the Japanese Garden organization was founded in 1997 by a group of dedicated volunteers. Since then, the Friends of the Garden has grown to become a diverse community of friends who support wellness, education, art and cultural appreciation at the garden.

Membership Levels and Benefits

All members enjoy basic membership benefits which include: year-round free admission to the Garden, invitations to member-only events, free and discounted tickets to garden lectures and cultural programs, a complimentary Member Tea & Tour, and FREE admission to over 300 gardens throughout North America with the American Horticulture Society's Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP). Associate, Guardian, Garden Fellow and Benefactor level members receive additional benefits including FREE admission to over 800 museums nation-wide through the North American Reciprocal Museums Program (NARM). Membership at any level supports the Garden's educational mission.

Basic Affiliate - $40

CSULB faculty, staff, alumni and students

  • Two adult membership cards
  • Year-round FREE admission for both card holders and children at the same household
  • Invitations to member only events
  • Free or discounted admission to lectures and programs
  • Complimentary Member Tea & Tour
  • 10% discount off Garden merchandise
  • Reciprocal Admission to Gardens Across America through the American Horticulture Society's Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP). Complete list of partnered gardens will be included in your membership packet.

Associate - $120 ($10/mo.)

All of the above benefits plus:

Guardian - $300 ($25/mo.)

All of the above benefits plus:

  • Private behind the scenes tour of the Garden

Guardian level membership can be paid in up to 3 installments

Garden Fellow - $500 ($42/mo.)

All of the above benefits plus:

  • Invitation to the annual Student Internship Reception

Garden Fellow level membership can be paid in up to 3 installments

Benefactor - $1,000 ($81/mo.)

All of the above benefits plus:

  • Invitation to University special events
  • Invitation to the annual Benefactor's Dinner

Benefactor level membership can be paid in up to 3 installments

Join Online

To join online, visit our online storefront. Simply select the membership level you wish to join and follow the instructions on the page. Be sure to fill out all mandatory fields. You will receive a confirmation email to the email address you provide.

To join over the phone, please call our membership department at (562) 985-2169. A friendly membership concierge will assist in processing your membership. You can also email the membership office to arrange a convenient time to join over the phone.

How long does it take to receive my membership packet?

It typically takes 7-10 business days from the date of purchase.

How do I renew or upgrade my membership?

You can renew your Garden Membership online.

To upgrade your membership, please contact our membership department at (562) 985-2169 or email the Garden membership office

What type of member events are there?

We have a variety of cultural, educational and entertaining member events all year long. There's something for everyone! Some examples include:

  • Seasonal Sekku Festivals
  • Horticultural workshops
  • Lectures and movie screenings
  • Evening fundraising dinner

Can I pay for my membership using the Beach Payroll Deduction program?

CSULB faculty and staff can pay for their Garden membership using the Beach Payroll Deduction program. Please contact Julie Wilson, the Campus Coordinator for the Support the Beach Payroll Deduction Program by telephone at (562) 985-8867.

How do I utilize the reciprocal admissions benefit?

Garden members enjoy the benefit of our reciprocal admissions partnership. Members of all levels receive free admission to over 300 gardens nation-wide through the American Horticulture Society's Reciprocal Admissions Program (RAP) and members at the Associate level and above receive free admision to over 800 museums in North America through the North American Reciprocal Museums Program (NARM).
