  1. Agenda: Approved
  2. Minutes: Meeting minutes for Tuesday, 3/20/2018, were not available
  3. Announcements
    1. Commencement – (1) Steven Manley, Professor Emeritus in Biological Sciences will be the Grand Marshall for Commencement on 5/22/2018. (2) Faculty regalia has been ordered.
    2. Budget and other things financial – (1) CSU Tuition request has been delayed for now. (2) Hiring Chill: All temporary employees must have approved exemption from Provost for rehiring at the end of contracts. Additional employment is excluded. Hiring Chill includes student assistants and work study SAs. All exemptions require Provost's approval. Allow up to one week for approval (No same day).
    3. Lecturer Evaluations are due on Monday, 4/9/2018.
    4. Freshman/Transfer student booklets are being prepared for incoming students.
    5. Geological Science' annual alumni field trip will be April 6-8. This year's trip is to Mt. Palomar.
    6. Nobel Laureate Lectures will be April 11 at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
    7. General Education Open Forum is today, Tuesday, 4/3/2018 in the USU. All are encouraged to attend.
  4. Fall Student Success Symposium
    1. Friday September 7, 2018 at the Pointe for CNSM staff and advisors.
    2. An organizing committee is needed to provide ideas about how to structure. Contact Associate Dean Slowinski.

        • Implicit Bias
        • Current CNSM course redesign presentations with a focus on student success.
    3. Booked keynote speaker Gregory Walton, Associate Professor of Psychology at Stanford University (Mindset Scholars Network). Bring a former CSULB Psychology graduate student (Advisor: Dustin Thurman) to help with workshop.
    4. In discussion with Jo Boaler, Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University and specializing in growth mindset for K-12 Math Education. Will possibly include LBUSD invite.
  5. Discussion of process for deciding on prioritizing tenure lines
    1. Reminder of ground rules – refreshed notes from Spring 2018 Chairs' Retreat, established dialogue rules.
    2. Data desired – considerations discussed
      1. Tenure Density of Departments
      2. Tenured-Probationary/#FTES
      3. Tenured-Probationary/#Majors
      4. Tenured-Probationary/#Grad Students
      5. % of class sections taught by Tenured-Probationary Faculty, Lecturers, TAs
      6. Service Courses and whether taught by TT faculty.
      7. Numerical representation and the student experience. Example: research classes taught by T/Prob faculty; LD classes also benefit from research active faculty.
    3. All are asked to remember that the dean needs to be able to make solid arguments for why we need to keep 120 tenured faculty lines (CNSM has one of the higher T/Prob faculty density at CSULB).
    4. Important aspects – even though we do not yet have a mission and vision given, what are some of the places that we feel it is important to address?
    5. Long-range planning – many departments have a 5-year plan. Should the college also create a 5-year hiring plan? Do we share each other's five-year plans?
