  6. Associate Dean Reports
    1. Research Barbara Taylor:
      1. Open Access Publishing Fund
A quick survey through Web of Science yielded the following data. Open access (OA) publishing currently accounts for about 13% of articles listed through Web of Science. At CSULB, our current numbers align with this: OA publishing has nearly tripled from 3.4% in 2010 to 9.1% in 2017. Numbers for CNSM also align with general data and vary among different disciplines: in 2017 18% of biological sciences publications and 4% of mathematics publications appeared in OA journals. OA publication represents a small but growing number of our publications - about 14/year in CNSM. OA publishing typically incurs charges of $1000 to $3000. Dr. Taylor proposed that CNSM create a fund to cover OA publication charges for faculty who do not have sufficient funds through grants or individual RS accounts to cover the publication charges they incur. Anticipating a current need to fund about 5 papers/year with the expectation that the number will grow. Dr. Taylor requested ORSP support to establish a fund of $10,000, and indicated the College would establish a mechanism to allocate these funds. The process could be as follows: faculty request funds and provide a copy of the publication. Funds would be allocated according to simple criteria: first-come-first-served; needs-based funding (i.e. the PI doesn’t have RS funds to cover the charges); funding available only once per year; confirmation that the OA journal is reputable; etc.
      2. Reminder that NSF Major Research Instrumentation proposal statement of interest is due to ORSP today.
      3. Report on proposal submission for 1st 6 months of FY2018 27 Proposals submitted. This is on par with other 6-month periods in recent years.

      1. The announcement for the CSULB Graduate Research Fellowship and Green Dean Graduate Research Awards will be sent to the college before break. As approved, there will be one solicitation within the college for both. Deadline is March 14, 2018, to the college.
      2. We will be generating a common CNSM list of graduate advisor duties. Individual departments may then augment this list for their own programs.
