School Counseling Fieldwork Partnership with Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Earns National Recognition as a Model Counseling Program

The CSULB College of Education's School Counseling program has developed a strong partnership with the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District.

Over the past three years, a total of 12 CSULB School Counseling graduate students have supported Norwalk High School via fieldwork experiences with the goal of applying for Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) status. During this time, graduate students worked alongside Norwalk High School counselors to develop a comprehensive and data-informed school counseling program. In order to support the academic success of Norwalk High School students, graduate students disaggregated data to identify those in need of support, delivered classroom counseling lessons, conducted academic advising, and facilitated small group interventions.

This spring, fieldwork partner Norwalk High School received the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation for their comprehensive school counseling program. They are the first Title I school in California to receive recognition as an ASCA Model Program. The district-university partnership has been an exciting example of how carefully structured and supervised clinical practice experiences can support program development and implementation so all students can achieve success while also preparing future school counselors.
