2nd Place at the 2018 CFAOC Investment Research Challenge
CSULB B.I.G. team 2nd Place at finals at CFAOC Research Challenge Regional Round
The CFAOC Investment Research Challenge, where a team of the B.I.G. students (Sheyenn Temple, Ronnie Williams, Talha Farooq, Brian de la Torre, and Raymond Leiva) presented sell-side research on Cubic Corporation (CUB). Out of a field that started off with teams from nine universities, only four (Chapman, ourselves, Cal. State Fullerton, and UC-Riverside) managed to complete a written research report (which was due on the same day as the Finance Department Advisory Board meeting) and move on to the presentation stage, Chapman once again came in first place in this competition. But our students also presented well and had a solid even if not perfect written report and they ultimately earned 2nd place in the competition, outperforming not only Cal. State Fullerton and UC-Riverside but also UC-Irvine, Azusa Pacific University, California Baptist University, University of La Verne, and the University of Redlands, which all dropped out prior to the written presentation stage.
All of the final student presentations ended up being very good, and the speaker at the dinner, Tim Gaumer, CFA, Director of Fundamental Research at Refinitiv (formerly the Financial & Risk business of Thomson Reuters) gave a good presentation in favor of what he referred to as “quantamental” analysis (a combination of quantitative and fundamental analysis), helping to reinforce a number of the lessons explored by B.I.G. students. All-in-all, it was a good day.
