Ana Beatriz DePaula-Silva

Dr. DePaula-Silva received her B.S. degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry at Sao Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil. In 2009, she moved to Salt Lake City to join Dr. Vicente Planelles's lab as a graduate student in the Division of Microbiology and Immunology in the Pathology department at the University of Utah School of Medicine. During her training, she worked on determining how HIV-1 establishes latency in infected CD4+ T cells and how HIV-1 accessory proteins overcome host restriction factors, allowing for viral infection and replication. She became fascinated by the interplay of host and viral interactions in the Central Nervous System (CNS) and its association with the development of neuroinflammatory disorders. This interest led her to conduct postdoctoral training in the laboratories of Dr. Robert Fujinami and Dr. Karen Wilcox, where her research in neurovirology now serves as the primary focus of her own laboratory. As a postdoc, Dr. DePaula-Silva secured multiple awards, including a T32 training grant, a Taking Flight transition award from CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy), and a NINDS K22 Career Transition Award. She started her own research group in September 2023 in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah. Her lab studies how viral infection of the CNS results in neuroinflammation and is associated with many neurological disorders, focusing mechanistically on the involvement of CNS infiltrating immune cells in the development of epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

The Seminar Series is a unique opportunity for students to learn about new developments in biology and what biologists do after they graduate. Hosted by the Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Long Beach, the weekly meetings invite guests from universities, research laboratories, and industry to present and discuss current topics in biology. All students are encouraged to attend.
