Shakespeare draws in fans

Do you love Shakespeare? If your passion for the author is not a ‘to be or not to be’ question, then join "Shakespeare Aloud."

The Long Beach community comes together one Saturday each month for “Shakespeare Aloud”, a free live reading of one of Shakespeare’s 37 plays. The event gives community members the chance to experience Shakespeare’s works as readers or participants. They can choose to be characters and read those parts of the plays.

But know your talent level. Shakespeare can be daunting, so readers should possess some theater background.

The readings take place in the Steve Horn Center, adjacent to the Cal State Long Beach University Art Museum. Doors open at 10:45 a.m. and the readings begin at 11 a.m.

Shakespeare Aloud began in October 2013 with Shakespeare’s first play “Comedy of Errors” and will continue chronologically until his final play, “Henry the VIII.” This Saturday, reading of “Macbeth” will be held.

The Arts for Life Shakespeare Aloud event at CSULB was inspired by the Nashville Shakespeare Festival, an annual event that partners with their public library and holds Shakespeare Aloud every month.
