Opportunities abound at Education Week
California is in dire need of teachers with shortages reported throughout the state. One way to help bolster the sagging numbers is to recruit future instructors through events such as the Cal State Long Beach Education Week.
Education Week, which will be held April 9-13, is a coordinated effort that highlights College of Education (CED) programs and ensure students know about the many options available. The planned activities and events give students the opportunity to explore programs and possible careers.
This year’s Education Week kicks off Monday with the Veffie Milstead Jones Endowment Lecture, “Beyond Lip Service: Understanding, Promoting and Quantifying Equity and Excellence in Urban Education.” The lecture is presented by Dr. Donna Y. Ford, professor of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University.
Other events scheduled for the week are panel discussions, student mixers, information sessions and a job fair.

Come by for a reception with Dr. Ford and stay for the annual Veffie Milstead Jones Endowment Lecture: “Beyond Lip Service: Understanding, Promoting, and Quantifying Equity and Excellence in Urban Education. The presentation focuses on barriers to equity and excellence in urban education. Key issues are addressed, along with recommendations to close achievement gaps, decrease under-representation in gifted education, and decrease over-representation in special education and discipline. Conversation – “Going Beyond the Single Narrative: Media Images of African Americans” 6 p.m.-8 p.m., Anatol AS-119
Images of African Americans in the media tend to promote a singular narrative from a deficit lens, that is not entirely reflective of our diverse experiences, accomplishments, and contributions. Come to this interactive discussion where current students will share how more recent media portrayals of Africans Americans (Black Panther, Insecure, Blackish,) have promoted more positive images that help us navigate microaggressions in professional and academic spaces. Videos, songs, and other media clips will be shown to moderate an interactive discussion with audience members. Presented by Dr. Shametrice Davis and students in the Student Development in Higher Education (SDHE) master’s program.

Campus Advisor Information Session and Breakfast (Invitation only) 8:30 a.m.-10 a.m., Chartroom
The Campus Advisor Info Session & Breakfast is an interactive session with College of Education staff and faculty. Our goal is to work together on finding ways to inspire students to pursue their dreams of becoming teachers, counselors, and other education professionals. College of Education representatives will answer questions on prerequisites, length of time to achieve credentials and degrees in education, and the job outlook in education, as well as provide information on where to refer students for help.

Students are invited to explore many options for financial aid and assistance for schooling through this "Money for School" presentation. There are many opportunities to take advantage of, including but not limited to, general financial aid, UDCP & UTEACH Scholarships, TEACH Grant Scholarships, as well as other College of Education Scholarships. This workshop is specifically geared toward students and alumni who are interested in a career in Education. Learn how to prepare and present yourself the day of the fair. You will learn specific things you can do to be successful at the job fair.
Information Session: MA in Education, Curriculum, and Instruction with Linked Learning Emphasis 4:30 p.m.-6 p.m., EED-17
This degree program addresses the needs of teachers, in school districts wanting to expand Linked Learning pathways, and current and future teachers seeking a deeper understanding of college and career pathways in secondary schools. The program incorporates current California curriculum standards and frameworks, standardized assessments, as well as Linked Learning principles and practices as part of the regular program curriculum.
Art in the Classroom 5 p.m.-7 p.m., FA2-205
“Arts integration” is an educational approach that incorporates the arts into other areas of study. The approach has been proven to increase performance in other academic areas if the connections are based on mutual concepts. In this workshop, participants will learn how to successfully integrate the arts into curriculum, making student learning more engaging and interactive. No RSVP required.

Vicarious Trauma in Children and Educators: Managing the Impact of School Violence 2 p.m.-3 p.m., AS-244
Because of the recent tragedies in schools, this presentation was created in order to provide an overview of what trauma and vicarious trauma is and how it impacts students and educators’ everyday life, as well as the long-term effects. It provides examples of possible warning signs seen in students as well as educators and resources on how to cope with these symptoms. Presenters: Alexis Begué and Heather Hutchison, Clinicians and Victim Advocates at the Long Beach Trauma Recovery Center.
Credential Center Added Authorization Workshop 3 p.m.-3:30 p.m., EED-17
Are you planning to pursue a Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential, or already have a Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential? If so, did you know you can add additional subject areas onto a general education teaching credential? This can help open up more teaching opportunities. Come learn about Added Authorizations available in Math, Science, English, Social Science and other subjects.
Urban Dual Credential Program Meet & Greet 3:30 p.m.-4:3 p.m., EED-1
Come learn about the Urban Dual Credential Program (UDCP) and meet current candidates to ask questions. The UDCP program allows candidates to complete their Multiple Subject Credential Program and Education Specialist Credential Program concurrently in a clinical setting. The UDCP program is a 2-year program that allows candidates to do clinical practice (fieldwork) their first year and student teach during the second year while completing the required coursework for the program.

Before heading to the Job Fair, meet some of the employers for informal interaction and career exploration, as well as a panel discussion on how students can make themselves more marketable. The event is sponsored by COESA and the Graduate Student Association and is a good fit for graduate students and others who might not be able to attend Friday’s Job Fair.
