Bob Spidell was born and raised in Andover, ME where he went to school and was a member of Andover High School baseball and ski teams. He excelled at downhill and slalom skiing, and won the slalom competition at a multi-school meet in Rumford, ME in 1951. He skied in the California and Maine mountains until he was in his 50’s. He graduated from Andover High School in 1951, where he was Salutatorian.
He joined the US Marine Corps in 1953. After serving 14 months in Korea as an Electrician and Machine Gunner, he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA for the remainder of his enlistment and was discharged in 1956 with the rank of Sergeant.
Bob liked Southern California and decided to settle here and take advantage of the GI Bill. He graduated from Long Beach City College with an AA in Business in 1960 and transferred to Long Beach State College (now CSULB) and graduated in 1965 with a BA in Economics. He was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters from CSULB in 2004. He also has a Designation in Government Contract Administration from UCLA Extension.
On December 28, 1963 he married Janet Ann Murphy, RN, in Long Beach, CA, with whom he had four children, Robert W. Spidell, Susan E. (Clardy), Jennifer A. (Hamdi), and James P. Spidell. Janet passed away on April 10, 2016.
Bob worked at North American Aviation as a Quality Control Administrator on the Apollo Program from 1964 to 1970. He then became a salesman and lecturer for Independent Tax Corporation, a pioneer firm in the use of computers to prepare tax returns. In the 1974, Bob founded Spidell Publishing, Inc., which became and still is the largest privately owned provider of tax information in California. The company publishes newsletters and books about new tax laws, and conducts tax seminars throughout California. Although he sold Spidell Publishing, Inc. to his employees in 1997, he is still a consultant to the company and a member of the Board of Directors.
Bob has been a member of the CSULB Alumni Association since 1989. He is a former President of the CSULB Alumni Association, the LA chapter of the Newsletter Publishers Association., the Mission San Juan Capistrano Docent Society and the California Society of Tax Consultants. He was also founding President of the Orange County Chapter of the California Society of Tax Consultants. He is a founding member and member of the Board of Directors of San Clemente Village, which helps senior citizens remain in their homes and maintain active lifestyles. Bob has lived in San Clemente since 1999.
