After earning a degree in political science, Ahumada was accepted into the Panetta Institute for Public Policy. After completing his time with the institute, James was hired to work in Washington, D.C. for Congressman Henry Waxman, Ranking Member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. While working for Mr. Waxman, Ahumada served as legislative assistant and deputy press secretary, handling a portfolio consisting of education, labor and financial services policy.

James volunteered periodically for the Obama campaign, canvasing throughout 2012 in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area.

Ahumada kept his ties with the university strong by also volunteering for many CSU regional events and was a founding member of the Cal State – D.C. Alumni Network. With Mr. Waxman’s retirement form Congress, James returned to Southern California to work with CSULB for Associated Students, Inc.

As senior communications manager, Ahumada manages a multifaceted office that handles the public relations, graphic design, web development, social media and photography needs of the company. James also trains and advises ASI staff, his student employees and campus student leaders on working with the media and in best practices in affecting lasting change.

Ahumada is proud to serve as VP of business development for the CSULB Alumni Association, long-standing member of his fraternity’s alumni board, and member of the 30th class of the Leadership Long Beach Institute.
