Hyflex Instructional Techniques

In "HyFlex" and Hybrid instruction, instructors can deliver their classes in traditional classrooms, but students may attend in person, participate synchronously through video conferencing, or watch recordings of the class sessions. CSULB Hyflex classrooms are configured to support video conferencing and lecture recording with a variety of screen-sharing options. Find out more about CSULB Hyflex classrooms.

Stipend Eligibility
Program participants who fall under one of the following categories may not qualify for the stipend:
- College of Continuing and Professional Education (CPIE) Instructor for Self-Supported (Non-Academic) programs or courses
- Academic Advisors, Teaching Assistants, and Student Assistants
- CSULB Staff and Students

Participants must complete the following requirements to receive the $350 stipend:
- Complete the Hyflex Instructional Techniques BeachBoard course, including learning activities.
- Attend or watch recordings of both training sessions listed below. To get credit for completion, please submit the evaluation form that will be provided to you. Recordings will be posted in the Hyflex BeachBoard course. Live (virtual) training sessions will be held on the following dates:
Using the Tech in a Hyflex Classroom
In this session, you'll experience a hyflex presentation from both an instructor and student perspective. We'll demonstrate how to operate the control panel at the Instructor's station including switching and adjusting cameras to display different viewpoints. We'll also show you how to record and save lectures to a USB drive.

Hyflex Pedagogical Methods
Attendees will collaborate with faculty colleagues to implement flexible teaching and learning strategies into their classrooms. Backward design and flexible course design templates will be used, and faculty will develop and share strategies for making student learning activities flexible across multiple modalities, including synchronous and asynchronous online and in-class modes.

There are no prerequisites for this program; it is open to all CSULB faculty even if you are not teaching in a “hyflex” classroom.

Course Peer Review
Dates: March 7 - April 24

Stipend: $280
In this program, instructors will work individually with a CSULB faculty member certified as a Quality Matters Peer Reviewer, who will provide valuable feedback and help prepare your course for QM certification. CSULB faculty Peer Reviewers are part of our Quality Assurance Community of Practice.
Note: This program is supplemental to Quality Essentials 1, which must be completed first. Submit the registration form no later than March 6.

Participants must complete the following requirements to receive the $280 stipend:
- Work with your CSULB faculty Peer Reviewer.
- Complete the ATS Internal Peer Review Template and make adjustments to your course to meet the criteria of that review.
Who can register and participate in the Course Peer Review program?
Faculty who are eligible to register for Quality Essentials 1 may register for the Course Peer Review program (it is actually part of the QE 1 registration form). Note, that you must complete and receive a grade of ‘Met’ for QE 1 in order to participate in this program.
How do I know if I need to opt-out of the stipend for this program?
Please contact your College/Department’s Administrative Services Manager (ASM).
Who will review my course?
One of the CSULB Quality Matter certified peer reviewers or one of Academic Technology Services’ instructional designers will review your course.
What will I be expected to update after I get the reviewer’s feedback?
Any standard that has been marked as “not met” will be accompanied by recommendations for improvement, changes in the course to meet the standards will be required.
Can I use any of my courses for the peer review process?
We strongly recommend that you use the same course that you have been developing through the ATS Quality Essentials programs.
What will be the depth of the course review feedback I will receive?
Each standard’s comments will include evidence of how the standard is met or not met as well as applicable recommendations for improvement.
Will I be paid for enrolling in this program?
If you have completed the Spring of 2021 Quality Essentials or the Summer 2021 Quality Essentials I programs, you will receive a stipend by successfully completing the peer review process. However, the stipend amount is embedded in the Quality Essentials 2 program.

Quality Essentials 2
Date: January 17 - March 13

Stipend: $1400
With the guidance of a CSULB Faculty Peer Reviewer, participants build on expertise acquired in Quality Essential 1 and continue to apply additional standards to their courses.

This document helps provide accountability and guidelines to satisfy course standards related to alignment, assessment, instructional materials, technology, and accessibility. - Build 6-7 weeks of your BeachBoard course.
- Attend four (4) Course Enhancement sessions listed for Spring 2022 on ATS Events and Workshops.
- Participate in a course peer review process coordinated by ATS.

It is not mandatory but strongly encouraged to attend.
How do I know if I need to opt-out of the stipend for this program?

What does it mean to be a certified Peer Reviewer?
Certified Peer Reviewers have successfully completed an intensive three-week Quality Matters (QM) course that consists of reviewing QM rubric standards and completing practice reviews.
Can I select my own Peer Reviewer?
No. ATS has partnered with faculty who have completed the Quality Matters Peer Reviewer course. Since these faculty members are now certified in the QM Peer Review process, we will be pairing you with someone to ensure you receive the best possible experience.
How will I receive support from my Peer Reviewer?
Throughout the program, your assigned Peer Reviewer will provide feedback and guidance as you work on the Quality Essentials 2 Standards Checklist. Your peer reviewer will make sure that each standard is being met by working closely with you.
What are the Peer training support sessions offered by ATS and are they mandatory to attend?
Throughout the program, ATS will provide peer training support sessions where you will meet with the instructional design team where they will go over and break down the 19th standard rubric checklist and provide examples and strategies on how to apply the rubric standards to your course. These sessions are not mandatory but are strongly encouraged to attend.
If I do not wish to participate further with QM after this course, do I still need to use an assigned Peer Reviewer?
Yes, in order to meet the program requirements, you will still need to work with a peer reviewer assigned to you.
Where do I submit the program deliverables?
You will upload and submit your document files inside BeachBoard using the Dropbox feature on or before the due date.
Can I enroll in more than one ATS professional development program?
You will not be able to take more than one program this Summer as the dates of the programs overlap.

Quality Essentials 1
Date: January 31 - March 6
Registration Deadline: January 30
Estimated Hours to Complete: 45-50
Stipend: $1750
This program will introduce online course standards adapted from the internationally recognized Quality Matters rubric, selected specifically to meet the needs of current CSULB faculty. During the program, you will apply a set of standards to one of your existing online courses. These standards include guidance on writing clear learning objectives, using a variety of instructional materials and activities, supporting student learning, and more.

This document will ask you to provide the locations of the 23 standards listed in the checklist in your course. The purpose of this checklist is to prepare you for the peer review program/process (optional). - Complete the Course Alignment Blueprint [PDF].
This document ensures that assigned Course Learning Objectives (CLO's) and faculty-designed Module Learning Objectives (MLO's) express a clear connection to course content, learning activities, and assessments as applicable. The purpose is to help identify desired results and determine acceptable evidence of learning as students progress through your course. Successful completion of this document will facilitate appropriately designed learning experiences and instruction. - Build 4-5 Weeks of your BeachBoard Course.

What if I have previously taken and completed the Quality Matters course “Applying the QM Rubric”(APPQMR)? Can this be substituted for the Chancellor's Office courses, Designing Your Own Course (DYOC) or Improving Your Own Course (IYOC)?
Yes, if you have taken the APPQMR course this can be substituted to meet the requirement of taking the DYOC or IYOC.
What if I have already taken the Chancellor's Office courses, Designing Your Own Course (DYOC) or Improving Your Own Course (IYOC)?
If you have already taken either IYOC or DYOC, then you have met this particular stipend requirement for QE1.
If I was enrolled in the previous Quality Essentials program but did not complete it, can I enroll again in this program?
Yes, if you enrolled in this program before but did not submit the required deliverables or complete the program, you can enroll again in the program a second time.
What if I completed the QE 1 program last year but did not work with a Certified Peer Reviewer and instead worked with a peer colleague? What are my options?
If you successfully submitted your deliverables and completed the Quality Essentials 1 program last semester, you qualify to work with a Certified Peer Reviewer and you can also register to move forward to our QE II program.
If I am interested in working with a Certified Peer Reviewer, what does that entail?
After you have completed the Quality Essentials I program requirements, you will have the opportunity to work closely with a Certified Peer Reviewer who will review and provide you feedback on your course. This process is estimated to take an additional 7 hours to complete within a 2- month period.
What does it mean to be a certified Peer Reviewer?
To be a certified Peer Reviewer one must successfully complete an intensive three-week Quality Matters course that consists of reviewing the foundational principles of Quality Matters 42 standard rubric and complete practice reviews.
After I participate in this program, will I be able to access the content of the Quality Essentials I BeachBoard course after the course has ended?
Yes, absolutely! Although the course will end it will always be active, therefore you can always access the information at your convenience.
Can I enroll in more than one ATS professional development program?
You can participate in more than one ATS professional development program if the dates of the programs do not overlap with each other.
