Commitment Statement: 

CSULB’s College of Education is committed to advancing equity and urban education by enacting racial and social justice. We illuminate sources of knowledge and truths through our intersectional scholarship, pedagogy, and practice. We collaborate with and are responsive to historically marginalized communities. We cultivate critical and innovative educators, counselors, leaders, and life-long learners to transform urban education, locally and globally.

Through the following aspirations:

Actions:

  1. Engage in multidisciplinary learning and partnerships.
  2. Hold critical conversations at appropriate times.
  3. Maintain a SPEL knowledge base and professional learning opportunities. 

Actions:

  1. Create, revise and assess programs and courses to ensure evidence and equity-based best practice.  
  2. Emphasize pedagogy of understanding social landscapes and confronting white supremacy.
  3. Make the curriculum approval process more effective and efficient.

Actions:

  1. Design a multi-dimensional wellness strategy for students, faculty, staff, and practice partners. 
  2. Improve positions, responsibilities, and functions to optimize human talent and capacity.
  3. Create a process to mitigate the negative impact of white supremacy and social landscapes on faculty/staff/student wellness.

Actions:

  1. Craft diverse educator pipeline programs and support.
  2. Cultivate multi-pronged partnerships with select school districts, community colleges and community agencies that align with our values and strengths and challenge us to address our shortcomings.
  3. Strategically include families and communities in college initiatives.
  4. Serve as a resource to urban schools and communities.

Actions:

  1. Ensure that clinical practice and supervision reflect evidence and equity-based practice for excellence in urban settings. 
  2. Increase funding opportunities for students in clinical practice.
  3. Expand practice-based opportunities for programs that do not require clinical practice. 

Actions:

  1. Advocate for equity and urban education in policy development at the local, state and national levels.
  2. Translate and disseminate scholarship and practice to multiple stakeholders for transformational change.
  3. Stay informed and communicate legislation, policy, and current events relevant to education.
