F. GRADING POLICY:

Students will be graded by 3 practical exams, 1 theoretical exam, a research paper and class attendance. More emphasis is placed on the final research paper for those taking the graduate level course option (Bio 568) and they are required to write a more detailed study. The exam dates and the breakdown of marks for the various exams are given in parentheses in the following section. Marks will be allocated as follows:

i) Practical Exams (Total allocation 30% ):
  • Practicum I; (10%) Block trimming, semi- and ultrathin sectioning.
  • Practicum II; (10%) TEM operation, printing and enlarging.
  • Practicum III; (10%) SEM operation.

ii) Theoretical Examination. (25% ).

An examination on the theory and applications of electron microscopy and interpretation of micrographs.

iii) EM Research Project. (40% ).

Each student will be required to complete this project which should aim to further advance our knowledge and understanding of some particular aspect of cellular structure and function. Check out further details on the research paper. Completion date for the project is .the end of the semester.

iv) Class Behavior (5%):

Other factors that will be considered in the assessment of your final grade will include your perseverance, attitude, cooperativeness and behavior in the laboratory.
