A. COURSE OBJECTIVES

The first semester of a two-semester sequence designed for biological science majors. The course introduces students to basic biochemistry, macromolecular structure and function, bioenergetics and cell metabolism. Attention is given to both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell organization with an emphasis on structural and functional relationships at the supramolecular level. The basics of Mendelian and molecular genetics and the cellular and molecular aspects of cell division, the cell cycle and meiosis are also covered. The class also covers the concepts and molecular mechanisms underlying the storage and retrieval of biological information from DNA and the regulation of gene expression. The latter part of the course is dedicated to microbiology and the structures and functions of bacteria and viruses. Attention is given to the field of microbial genetics and the use of recombinant DNA techniques in biotechnology. The course concludes with the theory of abiotic synthesis and the use of molecular techniques to study the origins of life and the evolution of cells and cellular diversity and specialization. The importance of cellular specialization as a prerequisite for the evolution of multi-cellular organisms is used to introduce the second part of this sequence (Biol 211B) which specifically deals with biological diversity.

The laboratory exercises in this course are generally experimental in nature although a few are descriptive and require the student to relate functional biological processes in macromolecular and cellular structure and form from observations. These exercises are designed to give students an opportunity to test experimentally a hypothesis of a biological process.

B. LECTURE AND LABORATORY SYLLABUS.

Lectures will be held in LH-151 Tuesdays/Thursdays, 12.30-1.45 p.m. Course # 1411.

You are responsible for all announcements, assignments, handouts, etc. even if you are late or absent from class. Laboratory classes are held in MLSC-rooms 102 and 104. Please ensure that you are on time for all classes.

Laboratory Instructors and their email addresses are as follows

Your laboratory instructors will occasionally post diagrams, handouts and other pertinent information on this website.  Click here to see if anything is posted for your laboratory.

The Learning Assistance Center also offers an accompanying Supplemental Instruction Class (S.I. 60 02 Class # 8003) scheduled for Tue/Thur 11.00 - 12.15 p.m. in LA2-201. This class can be taken for 1 unit of credit. The instructor for the class is Jeff Brown. Further information concerning this S.I. class will be provided the first day of class or can be obtained from the Learning Assistance Center.  You can contact Jeff Brown directly to add the class.

NEW SI CLASSES ADDED

i) Tue/Thus 5.00 - 6.16 p.m. (Course # 12000) LA1 room 301.  Enroll through VRR.

ii) M/W 12:30-1:45pm  CBA-235. Students interested in adding thi session should bring an Add/Drop form to the SI class. Class begins this Monday 17th September.

Please contact Jeff Brown for further details.

The Learning Assistance Center is also offering free group tutorials with the class.  Dates, Times and Venue to be announced.  For more information and to sign up contact dhann@csulb.edu

The reader for the class has yet to be announced.  Their office hours will be by appointment.  Extended office hours will be available directly after the exam

OTHER IMPORTANT CLASS INFORMATION

What is my current schedule?  You should review and confirm your class schedule now.  You can do this on "My CSULB" at http://my.csulb.edu or via phone 562/985-2500.  Be aware that information about waitlisted classes is available only on "My CSULB."  We encourage you to print out your schedule from "My CSULB" and bring it with you for the beginning of the semester.  IMPORTANT:  It is your responsibility to confirm your schedule, track waitlisted classes, class cancellations and room changes.

Still Need To Pay Fees?  Fees are due August 22nd.  Changes from part-time to full-time status and adds for non-resident students incur additional fees.  Failure to pay by your due date will result in cancellation of your classes.  Your ability to re-register for classes will be based on space-availability!   You can check your balance and pay with credit card on "My CSULB."

Still Waitlisted?  The last day to waitlist for a class is August 15th.  We will attempt to move students from waitlists for the final time.  At that point, all waitlists will be cancelled in preparation for the start of the term.  If you are waitlisted for a class, you should check your schedule to see whether we were able to enroll you in the class.  Please note that once classes begin, instructors are under no obligation to give priority to previously waitlisted students.  Once the class is in session links will be provided during the semester on current information for those students who wish to either ADD the class or TRANSFER lab sections or need to provide verification of PRE-REQUISITES.  These students need to periodically check these sites to establish their status.
  • PERMITS To Add: Students who will be permitted subject to verification of Prerequisites
  • TRANSFERS:  Students who can transfer Laboratory Sections
Need To Adjust Your Schedule? Go to "My CSULB" at http://my.csulb.edu

Need to Change your Schedule After Instruction Begins?  Registration and Adjustments ends September 17th. You must make all changes via "My CSULB" or via the phone registration system. Many classes require permission once instruction begins.  If the department or instructor grants you permission, it does not mean you are officially enrolled in the class.  You must still add the class yourself!  If for any reason, you are not officially registered in the class as of September 17 10.00 p.m., you must use the Late Registration Request form and register in-person, with the required approvals.  September 24 is the final deadline to officially add a class.   IMPORTANT:  If you are not officially enrolled in a class by September 24, you may not continue to participate and will not receive credit.

Do you have your new ID card?  Your ID card has your Campus ID number printed under your picture.  See the ID Card Services Office located on the southwest end of The University Bookstore building if you need an ID card.

Not Attending After All?  It is your responsibility to drop all classes.  See the schedule of classes on how to adjust your schedule for a refund of fees.  Continuing students who wish to return in a future semester will need to file for an Educational Leave by the deadline; new students will need to reapply.

For additional information including detailed registration and payment information, instructions and deadlines, please go to www.csulb.edu/enrollment or refer to the Fall 2007 Schedule of Classes.
