Textbook:
        Mathematical Statistics with Applications, 6th Edition,
        D.D. Wackerly, W. Mendenhall III, R.L. Scheaffer, Duxbury, 2002.

Prerequisites: Math 247 and Math 380.

Goal:

To provide a basic introduction to statistics, in both theory and application.Topics include: Estimation and hypothesis testing; Maximum likelihood and method of moments estimation; Efficiency, unbiasedness, and asymptotic distribution of estimators; Neyman-Pearson Lemma; Goodness-of-fit tests; Correlation and regression; Experimental design and analysis of variance; Nonparametric methods.

Grading Policy:

Homework/Quizzes: 25%
Exam 1: 25% (Wednesday, 10/25/06, 2:00-3:15PM, LA5-169)
Exam 2: 25% (Monday, 11/27/06, 2:00-3:15PM, LA5-169)
Final Exam: 25% (Monday, 12/18/06, 12:30-2:30PM, LA5-169)

Homework Assignments

Remarks:

Class attendance is expected and will be checked from time to time. If you have to miss a class for a valid reason, notify me in advance.
There will be approximately 5 announced quizzes given during the semester. No make-up quizzes will be given, but the one with the lowest score may be dropped.
Homework problems will be assigned and collected approximately once every two weeks and will be posted on my web page. No late homework will be accepted.
There will be two midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam. There will be no make-up exams except in extremely unusual circumstances.
If you received permission to register for a closed class section, only you can enroll for the course. It is the student's responsibility to complete the registration process before the dates indicated in the Schedule of Classes.
Please refer to the university policy and deadlines for withdrawals. It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from the course. The instructor has no obligation to withdraw students who do not attend classes, and may choose not to do so.
