Students Evaluate Faculty Members' Work for a Unique Exhibition

For the first time at California State University Long Beach, students will be presenting an exhibition of Southern California Community College faculty members.

What makes "Evaluation Inversion" unique is the perspective of students contributing to the art community by choosing work from artists who also have the demands of fostering the talents of their own students placed upon them. Interestingly, all of the artworks in the exhibition have been hand picked by students in Professor Roxanne Sexauer's History of Prints and Drawings class. Students in this class have coordinated all aspects of this show, including the call for works, the selection of specific pieces, publicity, web site development, and even the planning for the artists' reception. In addition, the Exhibition Design class in the Art Department is assisting in the actual physical design of the gallery space.

Students chose work they felt was representative of a wide range of themes and cultural backgrounds in order to reflect the diversity of the Southern California Art community. Also, a number of artists in the show boast CSULB degrees: Judy Chan, M.F.A. 1986; Daniel Freeman, B.A. 1968; Annie Stromquist, M.F.A. 1984; Medora Wildenberg, M.F.A. 1978; and Don Emery boasts 2 degrees from CSULB.

The subject matter in the prints-only event ranges from the colorful and symmetrical to the sublime. Many of the artists chosen have been practicing their trade for over thirty years, while further developing their talents through exposure to a number of different perspectives in their teaching careers.
