This Magic Moment series Seven photoscreen prints on Arches Buff paper comprise the series This Magic Moment. They explore the relationship between chance and necessity, bringing seemingly disparate elements from different realms of existence into contact, revealing the deeper connections that resonate and connect one plane to another. Silent movie stills, selected from hundreds of possible choices for their particularly "anticipatory" mood, and then transformed into grainy mezzotints, set the backdrop. The very focus of the action is excised from the scene and an image which is of a different nature but which amplifies the essence of the original moment of fixation is spliced into its place. As further commentary on the purposeful workings of chance, I have surrounded the imposed image with text generated by my typing "errors" as recorded on correcto-tape. The titles of the individual works in the series underline the mythic quality and sense of wonder that persist when one perceives a glimpse of transcendent meaning through the flux of events: Kali, the triple goddess of the Hindu religion, Mallakh, an angel or messenger in Hebrew, Simorgh, a Persian bird deity, Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano, La Fille d'Io (The Daughter of Io) whose mother had been ravished by Zeus in Greek mythology, Naiad, a dancing, nymph creature, and Mutual Eating Society, an expression of the underlying operational law driving life on the physical plane. |
