The Department changed the rules in Spring 2007. Under the old rules, if you failed (D or F) one Comp, you had to pass the other one with an A or B to save the pass and only retake one Comp the next time. Under the new rules, if you fail one Comp and pass the other with an A, B, or C, you may keep the passing grade and only retake one Comp the next time. However, you still only get two chances total, so it would be wise to prepare for both exams the first time you take them.
