



Winter Mountaineering (KPE 246A)---2 units, offeredSpring Semester
only.
The winter mountaineering course is an experiential examination and
analysis in the judgement, knowledge, equipment and skolls necessary to
safe mountaineering. . Course includes a field trip.
Field trip involves a 2-3 day trip to either San Jacinto Wilderness
or Mammoth.
Course Objectives:
- To develop those skills which enable the individual to function with
competence and safety necessary to wilderness travel and living.
- To familiarize the individual with the types and uses of necessary
backpacking and mountaineering equipment.
- To provide outdoor opportunities for the individual to experimentally
learn and demonstrate skills.
- To enhance the individual's perception of the wilderness environment
and its place in it in ways that can be extended to other environments.
- To extend the individual's self awareness by identifying his personal
limits.
- To expand the students capacity for responding to others and to construct
cooperative relationships around common needs, involvements and commitments.
- To provide situations and experiences which will stimulate individual
to examine and articulate his basic beliefs.
- To develop skills that provide physical conditioning for the participant
which can be pursued as a life long activity.
