2. Learn the verb zài (to be in, at somewhere)

Patterns

Statement: Somebody zài somewhere.
Question: Somebody zài somewherema?
Negative: Somebody b?zàisomewhere.

Study the following sentences. Do youunderstand them?
 

• Wǒ bàba māma zài Shànghǎi. (My parents are in Shanghai.)
• Wǒ dìdi yě zài Shànghǎi. (My younger brother is also in Shanghai.)
• Wǒ péngyou zài Pittsburgh. (My friend is in Pittsburgh.)
• Tāmen zài Shànghǎi ma? (Are they in Shanghai?)
• Tā b?zài Běijīng.  (He is not in Beijing.)
• Tā zài nǎr? (Where is he?)

Now try to say the following in Chinese:

My parents are not in the U.S. They are in China.

• Prof. Xie's younger brother is in Shanghai.
• My good friend is in France.

3. Learn the verb zh?(to live) and numbers

Patterns

Sombody  zh?somewhere

Examples:
 

• Nǐ zh?(zài) nǎr? (Where do you live?)
• Wǒ zh?(zài) ... (I live in...)
• Nǐ zh?duōshǎo hào? (Which house number are you live in?)
• Wǒ zh?4132 hào. (I live in 4132.)
• Wǒ zh?Bellfower 1135 hào. ( I live in 1135 Bellflower.)

Numbers

yī (one) èr (two) sān (three) s?(four) wǔ (five)li?(six) qī (seven) bā (eight) jiǔ (nine)  sh?(ten) líng (zero)

Now try to tell your address.

I live in 4531 Buena Park, Apt. #303
Wǒ zh?zài Buena Park 4531 hào, 303 sh?

(Pay attention to the order of the address inChinese. You must tell the street or road first, then the house number andfinally the room or apartment number. hào is for house number, sh?is for theaprtment number)

Now tell your phone number

Wǒ de diànhu?sh?562-985-5278. (My phone numberis 562-985-5278.)
(diànhu?means 'telephone'.)
