Step 2 Retell the content of Lesson 28 in your own words (in third person). The following English text may be helpful. Do not translate word by word. There may be several ways to express the same idea.

 

Yesterday Gubo went to the Chinese Embassy to apply for the visa, because he and Palanka will go to China to study Chinese in September. In the afternoon, he went to see the football game. The game was between the student team and the bank team. The students team played very well,  but it lost. Gubo thought that the referee was unfair.

 

Gubo is packing the suitcase. He needs one more hat. Palanka wants to buy a pair of skating boots. She thinks that it is possible to skate in Beijing in winter. Gubo said that he would give her a pair of skating boots. Palanka was very grateful to him. She wants to buy a hat for Gubo. They will go the store after eating the breakfast tomorrow.

 

 

Step 3

Learn more about the pattern 一…就…

 

The pattern is used to describe two events that happen one after another immediately. For example:

我一吃了中飯就去看電影了。

Wǒ yì chī le zhōngfàn jiù qù kàn diànyǐng le.

As soon as I ate the lunch, I went to see the movie.

 

There are two actions/events in this sentence. The first one is 吃了中飯﹐the second one is 去看電影了。Eating the lunch is the first event and going to see the movie is the second event. This second event happened immediately after the first event.

 

一 is optional. Therefore the above sentence can be:

我吃了中飯就去看電影了。

 

More examples:

 

我一下了課就回家了。

I went home as soon as I finished the class.

 

他一吃了飯就去游泳了。

他吃了飯就去游泳了。

He went to swim immediately after finishing the dinner.

 

Now try to say the following sentences in Chinese:

After the class was over, I went home immediately.

After he had eaten dinner, he went to bed right away.

After he had watched TV, he left. (zǒu le)

 

Note that the second event can happen in the future. In that case, the final 了 is not needed.

Example:

我一下了課就回家。

I will go home as soon as I finish the class.

Compare:

我一下了課就回家了。

I went home as soon as I finished the class.

 

Try th say the following sentences in Chinese:

After the class is over, I will go home immediately.

After eating, I will go to bed right away.

After watching TV, he will leave.

After studying Chinese, I will work as an interpreter.

 

Step 4 Reading comprehension

 

Be paired and discuss the reading text on page 330 “Watching the Football Game”

　

The following questions must be answered:

Is this a letter or diary? Who wrote it?

What did he do in the morning?

Did he have tickets for the football game?

Who gave him the ticket?

Which teams were playing?

According to him, which team can win?

Who lost finally?

Is the referee fair according to him?
