Wofford College, a leading undergraduate liberal arts college in Spartanburg SC invites applications for a full time position in Chinese language and literature or linguistics or cultural studies, this position to begin in September, 2004.    The Department of Foreign Languages at Wofford seeks a dynamic teacher and scholar who would like the challenge and responsibility of creating and implementing a new program in Chinese language, literature, and culture.  Pending a successful review of the program in the third year, it is anticipated that this position will then be converted to a tenure track position.  In support of this new program, Wofford College is committed to strengthening overall course offerings in China-related courses over the next few years.

 

Qualifications:  Ph. D. or ABD in Chinese language, Chinese literature, SLA, applied linguistics or culture studies, native or near-native fluency in both standard Mandarin and English, the necessary initiative to launch and manage this new language program, demonstrable excellence in highly effective undergraduate teaching both in Chinese language courses and in courses on China taught in English.

 

Teaching responsibilities:  In the first year, teaching responsibilities will include 1) a first-year sequence of standard spoken and written Mandarin during the fall semester, the January term and spring semester; and 2) two courses focused on China taught in English, one in fall and one in spring, depending upon the new hire's interests and the needs of the school.  In the second year, courses will include beginning Chinese (all three terms), intermediate Chinese (fall and spring) and two courses taught in English, at least one of which will be in the instructor's area of disciplinary interest.  Evidence of scholarly promise in conjunction with dynamic teaching is highly valued.  Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience.
