CHINESE LANGUAGE AND
CULTURE
The Chinese Department at Middlebury College
invites applications for a new tenure-track position in Chinese language and
culture beginning September 2004. Qualifications: Ph.D. in hand or expected by
August 2004 in Chinese language, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition,
applied linguistics, or related field; native or near-native fluency in
Mandarin and English. Teaching responsibilities will include a course or
courses in Mandarin (ranging from 1st through
4th year levels) each semester, plus in some semesters one or more of
the following: Mandarin for heritage learners; Chinese sociolinguistics (the
interaction of language, culture and society in China); a course in English
that contributes to the college-wide curriculum (e.g., first-year seminars and
interdisciplinary courses on language and culture). The normal teaching load is
5 courses per year plus 1 course every other January term. Evidence of
scholarly promise and commitment to dynamic, effective undergraduate teaching
crucial.

sample of scholarly work, and three letters of recommendation, at least two of
