The Inter-University Program for Chinese
Language Studies, a consortium of 15 schools, solicits candidates for the
position as Field Director of its program at Tsinghua University,
Beijing, beginning July 21, 2003.
The Field Director oversees all on-site aspects of an intensive Chinese language
program designed to train students from an intermediate to a professional
level. The program will enroll approximately 50 students in its academic
year and semester program, and 50 in its summer program. The candidate will
be responsible for all on-site aspects of IUP: curriculum planning and implementation,
student advising and support services; program administration, staff recruitment,
management, training, physical site maintenance, and liaison with the host
institution and IUP headquarters at UC Berkeley.
Candidates should have a minimum of five
years of experience managing academic exchange programs in an overseas Chinese-language
environment. Excellent speaking, reading, and writing
ability in Mandarin Chinese. Demonstrated leadership skills to motivate
and maintain high standards among Chinese staff. Ability
to set priorities and work independently, balancing multiple tasks and quickly
solving problems as they arise. Proficiency with
MS Word, Excel spreadsheets, Web browser programs, and Chinese-language software.
A commitment of two years is desired. Only under the most unusual of circumstances
will a one-year appointment be considered. A Ph.D. is desired but is not
required.
The Program’s administrative offices are currently
located at the University of California,
Berkeley. The Field Director
is an Academic Coordinator II position. Salary commensurate with experience
and qualifications. Basic travel and housing are provided.
