Lesson 3

Translated by Yuanita Muljono, Derf Tang and Louis Wershaw

Mother: Hello, is Li Xiaofen there? Would you ask her to come to the phone?
Student: She was just here, she probably went to the restroom, wait a minute, I'll go check.
Daughter: Hello.. this is Xiaofen.
Mother: Xiaofen, this is Mom.
Daughter: It's not the weekend, why are you calling me?
Mother: The last time you wrote you said that you needed some money. It's been almost 10 days and you still  haven't called.
Daughter: Mom, the food in the café is not sanitary. For the last few days I've had an upset stomach. I often have to go to the bathroom. I  went 5 or 6 times yesterday and feel very uncomfortable.
Mother: Have you seen a doctor?
Daughter: I went to the school hospital. The doctor didn't know what food caused the diarrhea, but he said that in the last few days several people have gotten diarrhea, probably from the food in the café.
Mother: Do you have a fever?
Daughter: I don't have a fever, I just don't want to eat anything. I lost several pounds last week.
Mother: It's OK to loose a little weight. Don't you always want to loose weight? If you cant eat rice then eat more fruit. Oh by the way, last week your father sent you $300.00. Have you received it yet?
Daughter: I got it.
Mother: If you've already received it then why haven't you called?
Daughter: It's almost mid term exam time and I'm very busy. I don't even have time to call you.
Mother: A call takes at most 10 minutes. Your really good at finding excuses.
Daughter: I'm not finding excuses. I'm really busy. I have to write a 25 page report for history class and I don't even have a title yet. I'm worried to death and your blaming me for not calling.
Mother: I'm not blaming you I'm just concerned.
Daughter: I found a job washing dishes in the café last week. 10 hours a week $5.00 an hour. It's a little better compared to minimum wage.
Mother: Aren't you too busy with your schoolwork? Why on earth are you still looking for a job?
Daughter: I've already spoken with the person at the cafe. I'll start working after the exam. By that time I think that I wont be quite as busy.
Mother: Since you are willing to work and earn some money I wont stand in your way. But don't get too tired.
Daughter: Don't worry, I know.
Mother: Next time call more often, don't make your parents worry. Understand? I wont say anymore. Bye!
Daughter: Bye, bye!
