The information literate student compares new knowledge with prior knowledge to determine the value added, contradictions, or other unique characteristics of the information.

Ways to Incorporate this skill into your Curriculum:

  • Incorporate multiple information types into your syllabus.  Use internet, books, articles and multimedia.
  • Design course content that encourages critical analysis of text by students.
  • Encourage students to add to course content by finding additional information sources and sharing them in a group discussion or essay.

Research Assignment

  • Having students compare and contrast information by source. e.g. comparing a web site with a print source.
  • Having students compare a scholarly source with a popular source. 
  • Having students evaluate an article or web site in essay form by examining statistics, perspective, origin of primary information etc.
  • Having students compare a primary source with a secondary source

Freshmen - Able to evaluate website based upon established criteria. 

Sophomore - Able to determine possible biases in all information types.

Junior - Able to evaluate information sources and select the best source for assignment.

Senior - Able to prove or disprove hypothesis based upon evaluating gathered information.

Information Competence Skill:

The information literate student validates understanding and interpretation of the information through discourse with other individuals, subject-area experts, and/or practitioners.

Ways to incorporate this skill into Research Assignments:

  • Have students conduct interviews with persons who have different perspectives on an issue. e.g. a democratic government official and a republican government official.  An administrator and a teacher, etc.
  • Have Students develop a portfolio which incorporates research, service learning experiences and personal narratives.
