Finding Information about a Press system

GENERAL

Europa World Yearbook
Available in print: REF AG 105 E85
Countries are listed alphabetically.  The Yearbook provides you with an overview of all countries worldwide.  It includes information about government, trade, judicial systems, religion and most importantly, an entire section of the press systems.  While it does not provide analysis it will give you a listing of principals media outlets and major press associations.
Handbook of Media in Asia
Available in print: REF P92.A7 H36 2000
Divided by countries of different regions of Asia. Includes countries like: India, Nepal, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and more. This book describes each country and provides the following information: demographics, government and politics, history of the press system in that country, policies and legal framework for the press, statistics, lists of major media outlets and a bibliography for further reading.
 
InterAmerican Press Association: Press Laws Database
This website includes country reports of press laws and legislation for the Americas including: Argentina, Canada, Jamaica, Peru, Venezuela and more!
BBC Country Profiles
This site is produced by the BBC News.  It provides media information for every country profiled.  To get to the list of countries you must first select a geographic region (located on the left hand of the screen).   You will then get a pull down menu of all the countries (sometimes very near the bottom of the page).  Click on the link entitled Media in the country profile and it will provide information regarding press law, major broadcasting companies other relevant information.
 
Freedom House Country Reports
This site provides brief summaries of press laws and political conditions effecting press freedom.  Covers all most all countries- a good starting place when selecting a country.
 
World press encyclopedia
Available in print: PN4735 .W6 2002
This title is arranged by alphabetically by country.   Even though it is a little old, you will find the basic outline of press systems throughout the world.  Please Note: If you are doing a county which has had a major change of government or civil conflict- this press system may have changed drastically from the date this book was written.

This electronic book provides an overview of the media in China with a discussion of the role of the media in today's regime.  Published by the Center for the Study of Intelligence.
International Media Publications
This page provides timely information regarding the foreign press and its interaction with government. Covers many different countries and provides in-depth analysis of press freedom for some countries.
State of the News Media 2004
This site offers an overview on all aspects of the media in the United States including an overview of the media outlet, ownership, public attitudes and charts and graphs.

    Finding articles and actual newspapers from other countries:
    International Newspapers at CSULB
    This list is arranged by country.  This list will tell you the newspaper title, place of publication, what years the library has and where it is shelved in the library.
     
    Today's Front Pages
    This page provides the actual graphics and text of over 300 newspapers from 39 countries.
     
    Factiva (CSU Authentication Required)
    Articles from International Newspapers can be found by region or specific title.

    Finding newspapers by region in Factiva:

    1. Click on "Region"
    2. Click on the name of the region or the +/- sign next to the Region to view individual countries.
    3. Click on individual countries to select them. You will then be able to type your additional terms in the search box.  Click on the screen to see what it should look like:
     
     
    Lexis Nexis Academic (CSU Authentication Required)
    Articles can also be found in this database although the method is a little different.  You can search for articles by region or specific titles.
     
    Finding newspapers by region in Academic Universe:
    1. Go to "Guided Search"
    2. Select "world news"
    3. select a region and if you are looking for a specific title, click on "source list" for exact titles.

    In-depth reviews of 191 countries, including geographical, political, economic, corporate, and environmental information. Updated with wire service news. This is great for getting background info on your country and also any current events that may effect the media (i.e. new government legislation, coup d'etats etc.)

    This site provides updates on various freedom of press issues internationally.
