Getting Started:
Questions to know before you get started on your research.

Hint: If you have no clue who you want to write about click here.

What time period is the writer from?
 
Prior to 1982
Then you won’t find much stuff online
Almost all of your information will be from print resources
 
After 1982
Online sources will work great!!!
Some print resources will be useful too
 
What kind of publications did the writer’s work appear?
Did the writer only publish in one publication?
Did the writer only publish a certain type of work? (political, women’s issues, etc.)
Did the writer publish in newspapers, freelance or popular magazines?

Finding Information by or about a writer

COAST (the library catalog)
Use the AUTHOR search to find works BY a writer
 
Use the SUBJECT search to find works ABOUT a writer
 
Use the KEYWORD search to see if a specific work by an author is included in a collection

Finding works BY a writer

Starting places for writers before 1982:

Print Indexes

New Yorker Index
Available in print: AP2 .N6764
Use this print index to find articles published between 1925-1970.  The best way to search is by the author's name.
 
Los Angeles Times Index
Available in print: REF AI 21 N55
Use this print index to find articles published in the LA times between 1972-1999.  You can search by the author's name.
 
New York Times Index
Available in print: REF AI 21 N44
Use this index to find articles published in the new york times between 1851-1996.   Search by author's name.
 
Readers Guide Retrospective
Available: Electronically
Use this index to find articles by a wide variety of authors in all kinds of publications.  This database goes back to 1890!
Historical Los Angelese Times
Available: Electronically
Use this FULL TEXT source for historical los angeles times articles from 1880 to 1955.

Starting places for writers after 1982:

Lexis Nexis Academic (CSU Authentication Required)
If you go to the "News" section of Academic Universe and select the "more options" tab.  Once you do that you will have the option of searching by Author. Just type in the first and last name of your author. Remember to select the appropriate dates.  Make sure your author has published in publications carried by Academic Universe.  To check just click on "sources".
Newspapers: Proquest (CSULB Authentication Required)
This database allows you to search for articles written by specific authors.  From the main screen click on the "Guided" search tab.  From the next screen you will be able to select "author"- just type in the name of your author.  You will then find articles written by that author if they are published in newspapers.
 
Factiva (CSULB Authentication Required)
Factiva allows you to search for articles written by an author in a variety of sources at once. Not only does it contain major newspapers but also more popular magazines.  To search for a specific author, select "Publications Library" then in the search box type the following: BY= your author's name here.  Make sure you have selected the "all publications" option at the bottom of the search screen and the appropriate date.
 
Reader’s Guide Abstracts
This will provide articles published in more popular publications like Rolling Stone Magazine and GQ.  This does not have the full text so you will have to see if the publication is available at CSULB or take advantage of our interlibrary loan service for the public library in Long Beach.  Click here for more info on getting your hands on articles from popular magazines not available at CSULB.

Finding Literary Journalists

American literary journalists, 1945-1995
Available in print: REF PS369 .A45 1998
This provides profiles of some of the most popular literary journalists includes a bibliography of their works and further reading references.
 
Literary journalism : a biographical dictionary of writers and editors
Available in print: Ref PN4820 .A66 1996
This will give you a starting place for finding basic information about a literary journalist.
 
Blue Eagle: American Media Columnists
This site is an index for a variety of news commentators.    You will find samples of their work full text on the site. It is arranged by Author or you can click on the broad headings such as politics to find a type of article.

Articles

MLA International Bibliography
This is an excellent source for finding analysis of a well-known writer's literary style or of the genre of literary journalism as a whole.   Good terms to use are: the author's name or the word journalism combined with either prose, rhetoric or literary.
