Introduction

Black Studies is a unique, multifaceted discipline that embodies scholarly research, activism, and an ethic of community service as critical to a fully evolved consciousness. The academic training and preparation of Black Studies scholars/activists who must continue to struggle against the intransigence of racism, sexism, and classism demands advanced skills in finding, evaluating, and applying information pertinent to the Black experience in America, Africa, and the Diaspora.

Consequently, the purpose of this Information Competence for the Discipline of Black Studies Tutorial is to update and enhance the information literacy skills of faculty. This tutorial will reinforce the importance of information literacy and illustrate how to integrate its main tenets into the curriculum.

We have attempted to adapt the values and perspectives of Black Studies into each module. To this end, each module is specifically tailored to address the unique information skills Black Studies students will need to be successful in an academic setting. Furthermore, the highlighted skills will be applicable to solving "real world" problems in the Black community, and the world beyond in the 21st century.

Before you begin please assist us in the evaluation process by taking the following Pre-Test. The results are completely confidential and will only be used to gage the effectiveness of the training.
