SHAQ for University 100 Students SHAQ (Success and Happiness Attributes Questionnaire) CARES (Computer Assessment and Recommendation Expert System) Located (here) on the Internet at: http://http://www.csulb.edu/~tstevens/success To read the article, "Causes of Success and Happiness in Career And Personal Life", click here. What is SHAQ CARES? 1. SHAQ is a Computer Assessment and Recommendation Expert System (CARES) that can automatically assess a wide variety of personal attributes that may be related to success and happiness in life area including the following:
* Relationships (especially romantic relationships), conflict resolution, and interpersonal communication.
Self-Reflection and Insights. Answering the questions is a process that can be valuable in itself. It gives you the opportunity to look at many aspects of your values, beliefs, and life skills. It gives you the opportunity to think about what is important to you and what aspects of yourself you would like to improve. The automatically scored results will give you a second chance for reflecting upon yourself and will give you help links for getting additional information.2. CARES Help Pages These web pages will list Internet links for immediate on-line help. Many pages will also give some direct advice and list other resources. Resources for CSULB students such as student services and classes will be listed as well. You can use the help pages without taking the SHAQ CARES Assessment, but you will be missing the chance to take a good look at yourself to learn more about your strengths and weaknesses. How do I Use SHAQ? (This is a typical SHAQ assignment given by some University 100 Instructors) 1. Bring Student ID with current semester stamp, 2 floppy disks, instructor name and email address, and your email address and password. 2. Find CSULB Open Access Computer Lab. LOCATIONS:
* FO5-371 (any computer in room). * Library Open Access Lab
3. OPEN Internet Browser. Go to and then to the start SHAQ page. 4. Follow the SHAQ Instructions (takes about 1-2 hours to complete entire process). 5. When SHAQ results print out, OPEN A WORD PROCESSOR (such as Word or WordPad), 6. COPY the results to the word processor (1-Move cursor inside Results window, 2-Select All [contr-A], 3-Copy [contr-C], 4-Move Cursor Word Processor, 5-Paste[contr-V] the results there). 7. SAVE the SHAQ Results to a floppy disk, then repeat to a second backup disk. 8. PRINT part or all of the results (perhaps just select the scale results section and print it). WARNING: the results could be 35-50 pages long, and the university charges up to 20 cents/page for printing. Print it out from home or a friend’s computer. 9. Explore the HELP LINKS that SHAQ gives in the main left window beneath the Results Window. Go to at least one or two Internet sites that are recommended. 10. WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT. Using the word processor (Word or Wordpad), a. List at least 3 specific self-improvement goals for improving personal success and happiness (e.g. during the next year). b. Find, read, and summarize the contents of at least one Internet link that is related to one of these objectives. 11. Address an email message to your instructor from that same computer. Copy 10a and b. from the word processor (using cut and paste) to the email message (before you send it). If you have completed SHAQ, state on your honor that you have completed it, and send the email to your instructor. (In most cases your instructor will receive independent verification that you completed SHAQ, if you had a problem with completing SHAQ, tell your instructor what it was [and notify Dr. Stevens–see above].) Note: Completing the Assignment on Home Computers. *If your instructor allows completion of the assignment on home computers note that the computer should meet the following specifications: 1. Have at least 96 MB of RAM, 2. Must download Java 2 Plug-in (Java 1.3 or above). This can be done semi-automatically when you start SHAQ. ==> PROBLEMS WITH SHAQ?
