INFORMATION
Our nation and the world is a mix of many
different cultures, religions, languages, and people of all sorts of physical appearances,
personalities, occupations, beliefs, interests, tastes, and behaviors. When you
consider all the differences, it may seem amazing the people get along as well
as they do. However, we all know of the many problems that occur based
upon conflict between people due to their not respecting other people's
differences, opinions, property, rights, etc.
Most hope that the world can
become a place that is more like Martin Luther King's dream for America: where
all people are respected and loved, where all people are appreciated for their
positive individual differences as well as their commonalities, and where we all
learn how to live harmoniously with each other.
ADVICE
One way to make this dream come true is
for all of us to examine our own prejudices and areas where we don't understand
or accept others who are different from ourselves. Even though it may be hard,
we can learn to understand, accept, and appreciate how differences contribute to
the benefit of the whole and make the world a more interesting and exciting
place in which to live. Learning how to understand what is a truly threatening
belief or behavior as opposed to our sensitivity to any belief or behavior that
is too different takes understanding and wisdom. It is probably best to give the
other person the benefit of the doubt in almost all cases and see differences as
interesting--not threatening or bad.
To cleans ourselves of
prejudice, we must intensely question ourselves whenever we feel negative
feelings about someone else being different. The rewards are great.
We can then go through life relating to more people harmoniously and find
greater inner peace through having fewer fears and resentments toward others.
