Instructional Setting:

Single Student, Small Group, Whole Class

Teacher Computer Skills:

            Intermediate to Advanced

General Description of Lesson:

Working in groups, students will survey the class on a previously covered theme/topic.  Responses from survey will be put into a database.  Using a graph, groups will report their findings to the class both orally and visually by using creating a power point presentation.  For their physical education class student will work in groups to gather information on non-traditional sports such as lacrosse, and present the information to the class.

Standards:

Physical Education Standard 5:

1.4 Choose appropriate techniques for developing the introduction and conclusion

1.5 Recognize and use elements of classical speech forms (e.g., introduction, first and second transitions, body, conclusion)

1.7 Use props, visual aids, graphs, and electronic media to enhance the appeal and accuracy of presentations.
1.8 Produce concise notes for extemporaneous delivery.
1.9 Analyze the occasion and the interests of the audience and choose effective verbal and nonverbal techniques (e.g., voice, gestures, eye contact) for presentations.

Objective of Lesson:

Listening & Speaking Strategies and Applications: Prepare, ask and respond to basic interview questions.

Listening & Speaking Strategies and Applications: Actively participate in social conversations with peers and adults on familiar topics by asking questions and soliciting information.

Listening & Speaking Strategies and Applications: Prepare and deliver short presentations on ideas, premises, or images obtained from a variety of sources.

Writing Conventions: Edit and correct basic grammatical structures and conventions of writing.

Assessment:

Rubric for power point slides and the use of data base software.

Rubric for oral presentation skills

Key components of rubric should include: Interview questions all relate to one topic, provide multiple choice responses and are relevant.

Interview questions are written clearly using correct grammar and mechanics.

Data is collected from all class members and is recorded on spreadsheet.

Conclusions presented are correct based on data collected.

Five slides including a title page, list of group members and information gathered.

All members of group participate in presentation.

Technology:

Software:  Power Point, Database software (preferably Excel)

Computer Equipment: Computer (Lab or Computer on Wheels Cart), Internet Connection, Printer, multimedia projector

Materials Needed:

·         Paper and pencil

Lesson Implementation:

Explain to students that they will be surveying each other their knowledge of non-traditional sports (provide list depending on demographics of school) .  Each group (of four or five students) will be responsible for creating five questions regarding their topics.  Make sure the questions are close-ended.  For example

Have you hear of lacrosse?

_____  Yes

_____  No

Which of these sports have you participated in?

_____   lacrosse.

_____  badmington.

_____  cricket.

Collect five questions from each group .  Teacher is responsible for putting together all sets of questions into a larger survey. Before putting it together decide as a class what “general” questions are also important to know about the class.  These questions will be included at the beginning of the survey.  Prompt students by asking questions such as: “Is it important to know if the person being surveyed is male or female?  Does the person’s grade level or age matter?”  Asking such questions will allow them to manipulate variables using the database.  It will also allow them to have a more detailed report.

Survey class.

Give each group its set of data.

Allow each group computer time to input data into group-specific spreadsheet and create ten graphs based on data.  Provide a step-by-step instructional handout on how to use Excel.

Using graphs, have groups write concluding statements they will report to the class.

Provide handout on how to create basic PowerPoint presentation.

Students are to create five slides. 1) title with name of group members.  Graphs and tables illustrating data.

Have each group present its report to the class.  Each group should demonstrate its graphs and share its statements.

Time:

Have students survey during one class session (one hour).

Computer time:

One class session on how to use excel and input data.

Three class sessions for students to insert, manipulate and create their power point.
