Lesson Created Using a Lesson Plan Builder

Profile

Contributors: a former ETEC 411 student
Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level: 6
This lesson could also be used for the following grades: 7, 8

Additional Subjects: English-Language Arts
Instructional Setting: Small Group, Whole Class
Student Population: At grade level, Advanced, English language learners, Reading below grade level, Special Education

General Description of Lesson:
Students will consider an individual habit and its cost. They will then learn about ratios and proportions, and use that knowledge to calculate the cost of a habit over extended periods of time. Students will then use the internet to find the cost of other habits, then write a detailed comparison of the costs associated with various habits.

Standards

Content Standards Strand/Domain: Algebra and Functions, Mathematical Reasoning, Measurement and Geometry, Number Sense

Content Standards:

Number Sense
1.2   Interpret and use ratios in different contexts (e.g., batting averages, miles per hour) to show the relative sizes of two quantities, using appropriate notations (a/b, a to b, a:b).
1.3   Use proportions to solve problems (e.g., determine the value of N if 4/7 = N/21, find the length of a side of a polygon similar to a known polygon). Use cross-multiplication as a method for solving such problems, understanding it as the multiplication of both sides of an equation by a multiplicative inverse.

Objectives

Objective(s) of lesson:
Following instruction, students will correctly multiply two or more ratios, and express the total in simplest form.
Following instruction, students will demonstrate ability to cross-cancel terms in a fraction-multiplication problem.
Following instruction, students will complete related homework with 90% accuracy and all work shown on paper.
Following instruction, students will demonstrate ability to use the internet and a word processing program.

Technology

Electronic Learning Resource(s):

Software Applications: Word Processor, Web Browser
Computer Equipment: Computer, Internet Access, Printer
Video Equipment: None

Teacher Technology Competency Level (CTAP2 Rubric):

Procedure

Time Required: 2 class period(s) of 50 minutes.

Materials and Resources used by teachers and students:
Teacher: Overhead projector and screen, textbook.
Student: Textbook, notebook, pencil.

Preparation for Teacher:
Write definitions, examples, and notes on overhead sheets. Coordinate computer lab usage. Make copies of sheet of workbook problems.

Step by Step Teacher Procedure:
Day 1:
1. Explain key terms, and write them on the board
2. Give examples of problems with unit conversion and ratio multiplication, and explain steps on the overhead
3. Explain how to solve each type of problem that is covered by the homework, and give examples
4. Demonstrate how to solve the Pizza problem earlier:
3 cheese/6 total = ˝ cheese
3 pepperoni/6 total = ˝ pepperoni
Given: 2/3 of pepperoni also has sausage
(3 pepperoni/6 total) x (2 sausage/3 pepperoni) = 1/3 of total has sausage and pepperoni
5. I would then draw a pie chart to explain the solution visually.
6. I will leave a solved sample problem on the overhead and allow textbooks to be used
7. Groups of 2 or 3 students will work together to completely solve a handout sheet of problems
8. I will monitor group work to assist when necessary
9. When a group turns in the completed handout, they may leave desks together, but must begin working individually on assigned homework
Day 2:
1. Class will go to computer lab.
2. Explain expectations to students. Each should research the cost of at least 2 habits and then use ratios to get all habits in equal units ($/month, for example).
3. Instruct students to close web browser and open Microsoft Word. Student should explain findings and calculations in paragraphs, using proper grammar. Writing assignment should be 1/2 to 1 page.

Assessment

Assessment Type(s): Writing Samples, Other: homework
Assessment Plan:
I will make intentional mistakes on the overhead problem solving
I will check students’ understanding by using thumbs up/thumbs down
I will observe student facial expressions during the lesson
I will ask students to solve overhead problems verbally to the class
If someone has a question, I may ask another student to answer it
Student will complete a writing assignment which will be graded on clarity, use of internet, and correct math computations.

Enhancement

Notes, tips, suggestions and/or extension activities:
Nothing entered for this section.

Cross Curricular Connections:
Student will practice writing an explanatory essay/paragraph.
