This class is an in-depth seminar / colloquium investigating the legacy of Michel Foucault's work.  It will begin with a discussion of some of his early debates about technologies of power and then explore two of his most consistently used works—The History of Sexuality and Discipline and Punish.  Navigating between primary Foucaultian texts and dialogues with those texts by prominent critical theorists, we will explore the ways in which Foucault's work has been accepted, rejected and manipulated by his colleagues.  The second component of this class will explore the ways in which Foucault's theories have been applied (consciously or unconsciously) by historians of modern Europe .  By the end of this class, students should have a better comprehension of Foucault's work and the rich tradition of critical theory in which it continues to operate.
