Introduction

Latino student in front of Mexican and US flags
Chicano & Latino Studies is a unique, multifaceted discipline that embodies scholarly research, activism, and an ethic of community service as critical to a fully evolved consciousness. The academic training and preparation of Chicano & Latino Studies scholars/activists who must continue to struggle against the intransigence of racism, sexism, and classism demands advanced skills in finding, evaluating, and applying information pertinent to the Latino experience in the Americas.

In response, the purpose of the Seeds of Change/Semillas de Cambio Information Competence for the Discipline of Chicano & Latino Studies Tutorial is to infuse skill building information literacy into targeted CHLS core classes. Additionally, this tutorial will reinforce the importance of information literacy and provide examples of how to integrate its main tenets into the curriculum. Following each module assignments and discussion will occur related to the incorporation of information fluency into CHLS 101, 150, 300, and 310.

I have attempted to adapt the values and perspectives of Chicano & Latino Studies (CHLS) into each module. To this end, each module is specifically tailored to address the unique information skills Chicano & Latino Studies students will need to be successful in an academic setting. Furthermore, the highlighted skills will be applicable to solving "real world" problems in the Latino community, and the world beyond in the 21st century.
