 Research Databases for Chicano & Latino Studies Research

Subject research for journal, magazine or newspaper articles requires use of the CSULB Research DatabasesTopic and Title approaches are provided to the over 150 databases available for user research.  A CSULB library password is required for  remote access.


TIP: Various subject headings are used to identify information on Latinos including but not limited to: Hispanics, Hispanic Americans, Mexicans living in the United States, "Alien Labor, Mexican," Immigrants, Mexican, Chicanas, Chicanos, Mexican Americans, Salvadorian Americans, Cuban Americans, etc.

ACADEMIC SEARCH COMPLETE
A comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database, with more than 5,300 full text periodicals, including 4,400 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage: Varies. Some titles from 1865 to present.

ETHNIC NEWSWATCH
This database is an excellent source for finding Latino community perspectives on almost any topic. Local coverage of the Los Angeles area is provided in the Spanish language publication La Opinion. Ethnic NewsWatch is a full-text resource of magazine, newspaper, and journal articles written by and for various ethnic groups in the United States including Latinos/Hispanic, African/Caribbean, Jewish, Middle Eastern, Native American, Eastern European and Asian American. 

CHICANO DATABASE
Over 42,000 bibliographic citations on the Chicano and Latino experience in the United States.  Coverage is in all subject areas, and includes books, Chicano journals, mainstream journals, anthologies of all types, and other forms of publication.  Coverage: 1965 to approximately 5 years from current date.

SocINDEX provides abstracts to articles on topics of abortion, criminal justice, ethnic & racial studies, gender studies, marriage & family, political sociology, religion, rural & urban sociology, social development, social psychology, social work, socio-cultural anthropology, sociology, sociological theory, substance abuse & other addictions, violence and many others.  Coverage: 1940 to date.  Updated monthly. 

MLA INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY
An excellent source for references to scholarly books, critical articles and essays in journals, and books on Chicano or Latino literature, language, linguistics, and folklore. Coverage:  1963 to present.  Updated ten times per year.

SOCIOLOGICAL ABSTRACT
Provides access to international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social & behavioral sciences.  Coverage: February 1963 to date.  Updated monthly.

AMERICA: HISTORY & LIFE

Excellent coverage of historical scholarship on Latinos in the United States. Over 2,000 scholarly journals, books, review articles, and Ph.D. dissertations covering United States and Canadian history and culture (from prehistoric times to the present). Coverage: late 1950s to date.

GENDERWATCH
This database includes full-text articles on women of color. Coverage: 1965 to present.

LATINO LITERATURE
Latino Literature contains approximately 380 plays and 67,500 pages of prose and poetry by Chicano, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican and other Latin writers working in the United States. Coverage: 1800s to date.

CLASE/PERIODICA
Clase indexes documents published in Latin American and Caribbean journals specializing in the social sciences and humanities, while Periódica covers journals specializing in science and technology.     
Coverage: 
Clase - 1975 to present; Periódica - 1978 to the present. 

NEWSPAPERS
This database includes full-text of the Los Angeles Times.  Therefore, making it a good source for local information on Chicanos and Latinos.

PRISMA/HAPI
Prisma (Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanísticas)/HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index) is a database which offers full-text scholarly journals in social sciences and the humanities for Hispanic, Latin American and Caribbean studies.  Searches can be limited to Latinos in the United States. Coverage:  1991 to present.  Updated monthly

PROJECT MUSE
Provides the full-text of electronic scholarly journals in Chicano & Latino Studies.
