Long Beach State splits December matches, prepares for Spring 2007 stretch

Long Beach State concluded the Fall leg of their 2006-07 season splitting matches against UC Irvine and UNLV to improve to 7-2 for the year.
In the match against UC Irvine, the Beach lost to the host Anteater 21-7. Ryan Steele scored in minute 79, and Robert Hughes added a conversion. The reserves defeated UC Irvine 13-0. David Lee added 2 penalties, in the first half, and Jason "JP" Palaita added a try in the second half, also converted by Lee.
Against UNLV, the Beach rebounded the following week for a resounding 41-20 victory in Las Vegas to end their Fall season on a high note. ("The score was 10-10 at half time," said head coach Dr. Emyr Wlliams after the match. "Playing up hill and into the wind suited our guys, and they played much better in the 2nd half. "
Among the try scorers for the match with UNLV included Robert Hughes (2), Brandon Johnson, Christopher Layne, Steele, Ash Havens, and Austin Reid. Hughes added 3 conversions.
The 49er Rugby team will take the winter break off before resuming action on Sunday, January 14, 2007with a tilt with the Spartans of San Jose State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the CSULB Rugby Field.
