It was a successful weekend full of great hits, greats rucks and mauls, and countless tries in between as the Long Beach State 49er rugby team played host to the 2006 CSULB Kickoff Tournament in Long Beach.
The Beach first side swept through their pool, defeating UC Santa Cruz in an 8-5 squeaker, won on a Robert Hughes conversion; and UC San Diego 22-10 in a complete domination of the visiting Tritons. However, they would run into a buzzsaw against the Cal Poly first side, losing 17-10 in what essentially was a preview of the upcoming SCRFU Division 1 season in the spring.
For the Beach reserves, they swept their pool, defeating UC Riverside 24-0, the UC Irvine reserves 12-0. and the Cal Poly reserves 22-7. With Long Beach State being "B Pool Champions," the depth of this year's team will be a crucial factor for the 49ers' success in the upcoming weeks leading off to the spring season starting in January.
Cal Poly crushed UC Irvine in the final, 26-7, to win the CSULB Kickoff Tournament.
Long Beach State returns to action on Sunday, November 19, to take on the USC Trojans. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the CSULB Rugby Field.
