49ers make easy work out of UC Riverside and Caltech in twinbill

The 2006-07 rugby season continued to find more consistent results for the Long Beach State 49er rugby team, as they faced the UC Riverside Highlanders and the Caltech Beavers in a doubleheader at the CSULB Rugby field on October 28, 2006. Using split squads of veterans and starters, the Beach played 30-minute games against UCR's first side, followed by Caltech, and then UCR's reserves with their second side.

Long Beach State won the match against UCR I 24-0. the scoring was led by Austin Reed with a try in the 11th minute, followed by another from Nick Gasdia in the 23rd minute. Soon after, Greg Philip cashed in for the Beach's third try of the game, and the try assault on the Highlanders finished with a score from Monté Fields in the first minute of stoppage time. Robert Hughes was 2 for 4 on conversions, converting on the last two tries.

The second match saw the 49ers defeat the Beavers 14-5. While Robert Hughes converted on the points after tries, he also scored both tries off breakaways in the 10th and 13th minutes of play. A late try was scored by Caltech in the 20th minute, but it would be too little, too late. With the wins, Long Beach State improves to 3-0 for the year.

In the closer, Long Beach State's second side steamrolled over UCR's reserves 27-0.

The Beach takes action next week at home in an exhibition: the Alumni Game against the LBSU Old Boys. Kickoff starts at 1:00 p.m. on November 4.
