The 2006-07 rugby season began on a high note for the Long Beach State 49ers, who kicked off their campaign with a match against the Loyola Marymount Lions on the CSULB Rugby Field. Warm October weather combined with an enthusiastic crowd of about 100 in attendance as the Beach defeated LMU, 37-5.

The Lions got on the board first with a try in the 10 th minute of play, leading 5-0. Those would be the only points scored by visitors from Los Angeles . Long Beach State struck back with a try from Jay Castro in the 17 th minute, and the 49ers led 7-5. With no further scoring in the period, this was the score at halftime.

The second half saw the Beach take control. In the 41 st minute, a try from Jason Palita increased the lead to 14-5, and 4 minutes later, Morgan Moen would score the 49ers' third try in the 45 th minute, and five minutes after, Robert Hughes added another in the 50 th minute. Two more tries would be added after Hughes' score, each by Austin Reed ( 60' ) and Nick Dazier ( 65' ). Reed try was scored off a knock-on by the Lions deep in their own territory.

Hughes was 3 of 7 on conversions, with 2 conversions after the try, and a penalty in the 75 th minute of play.

Long Beach State improves to 1-0 for the season. In the B-side match, thr 49ers also defeated Loyola 22-5.

The Beach will next face the Caltech Beavers and the Highlanders of UC Riverside in a doubleheader on October 28. Kickoff for the twin bill will be at 1:00 p.m. at the CSULB Rugby Field.
