After a long, arduous season which saw the 49ers of Long Beach State finish in the middle of the ladder in SCRFU University Division One play, about 60 or so loyal fans sat down on the grandstands of the CSULB Rugby Field for a Saturday morning contest between the first side and the CSULB Old Boys, the alumni team, on May 13, 2006.
The CSULB Old Boys were led by players such as Fall 2005 Vice President Apineru Lealofi, while President Ash Havens led the first side.
With head coach Dr. Emyr Williams officiating the match, the fans witnessed a showcase of skill from the past and present.
A final effort in the closing minutes of the 2 nd half by the Old Boys side saw them defeat the Beach, 29-24. But while the winner of the match was the alumni, the real winner of the day was rugby, and the match was a tribute to the program‘s tradition, and another successful year for Long Beach State.
The 49er rugby team will tour Argentina in the month of August 2007. Be sure to check www.csulb.edu/~rugby for upcoming news and event regarding the team's tour.
The CSULB Rugby players, coaches and staff thank you for your support during the 2005-06 rugby campaign.
