What looked like a promising start to the 2006-07 rugby season for Long Beach State ended in pure, horrific futility, the type of rugby that epitomized a season gone south too early, too soon. The 49ers were shut out by an opportunistic San Diego State team, 60-0.
The Aztecs were able to wrest the second spot for the SCRFU in the National Tournament with an 8-1 record, and 38 points. Cal Poly wrapped up the number one spot with the same record, and 41 points, winning the division title.
In the reserve match, the Aztecs defeated the Beach, 36-10. The ending was just as tragic for a reserve side that dropped a string of matches after slaughtering Arizona State earlier in the season, including a forfeit of their match with Cal Poly. This was the only forfeit of the entire SCRFU season in University Division I play.
The Beach finishes their 2006-07 campaign 8-11, 1-8 in SCRFU Division I. The 49ers now focus their attention to the Summer 2007 Argentina and Rio de Janeiro Tour. News on the Beach's contest there will be posted on this site and The Squeeze.
Long Beach State's rugby team, coaches, players and staff thank you for your support during the 2006-07 season.
